Brittlebush (Encelia farinosa) is a stunning desert native shrub that explodes in golden-yellow daisy-like flowers in late winter and spring, coating dry hillsides in brilliant color. Silvery-gray aromatic foliage provides year-round interest and reflects heat, making it one of the most drought-adapted plants in the Southwest.
Growing: Sow in fall in full sun and very well-drained soil. Extremely drought-tolerant once established; overwatering is the most common cause of failure. Short-lived but self-sows readily.
Wildlife: Flowers are a rich pollen and nectar source for native bees and butterflies in late winter when few other plants are blooming.
