Chia (Salvia columbariae) is a California native annual sage with whorls of small blue-violet flowers stacked along upright stems. Long valued by Indigenous peoples of California as a nutritious food and medicinal plant.
Growing: Direct sow in fall through early winter in full sun and well-drained soil. Drought-tolerant; thrives on winter rainfall alone.
Wildlife: Nectar source for native bees and butterflies; mature seed heads feed finches and other small birds.
