Woolly Milkweed (Asclepias eriocarpa) is a robust California native perennial milkweed with large, velvety gray-green leaves and dense clusters of creamy white to pale lavender flowers. One of the most striking and largest milkweeds native to California, it is a critical host plant for Western monarch butterflies and an outstanding choice for dry, sunny gardens.
Growing: Sow in fall for natural cold stratification, or cold-stratify seeds for 30 days before spring sowing. Plant in full sun and well-drained to dry soil. Extremely drought-tolerant once established; deep taproot makes it long-lived and heat-resilient.
Wildlife: Essential larval host plant for monarch butterflies. Large flower clusters attract native bees, wasps, butterflies, and hummingbirds throughout the bloom season.
